Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has directed authorities to compile a comprehensive list of individuals killed by Chhatra League, other Awami League affiliates, and state forces under the previous government’s orders in the 15 years leading up to the mass uprising on July 24, 2025.
The announcement came during a meeting with the family of Abrar Fahad, a BUET student killed by Chhatra League members, at the State Guest House Jamuna on Thursday afternoon.
Mohammad Barkat Ullah, Abrar’s father, along with Abrar’s younger brother, Abrar Fayyaz, and uncle, Mohammad Mofazzal Hossain, met with Professor Yunus to discuss the brutal killing of Abrar Fahad. They urged the government to expedite the trial of Abrar’s murder case and to investigate all incidents of violence perpetrated by Awami League affiliates prior to the July uprising.
Barkat Ullah stated, “Abrar was brutally beaten to death by terrorists for speaking out for the country and against the unequal distribution of water. His mother still grieves, and no other mother should endure such pain.”
Barkat Ullah also raised a local issue, highlighting the long-standing demand for a bridge over the Gorai River in Kushtia, which affects approximately 30,000 people. He requested the Chief Adviser to initiate its construction to alleviate community suffering.
Abrar Fayyaz, a third-year BUET student, called for reforms to make educational institutions more student-friendly, citing inadequate facilities such as labs and equipment.
“We have high expectations from the interim government to improve our campuses,” he said. He also urged stricter measures to end ragging at BUET, noting, “This isn’t the first incident of harassment. Past cases must be investigated and addressed.”
In response, Professor Yunus described Abrar Fahad’s killing as a tragedy that “stunned the nation” and assured a fair trial.
He confirmed that the government is already acting to investigate killings by Awami League affiliates and state forces before the July 24 uprising. “A list of victims will be compiled, and each incident will be thoroughly investigated,” he said, emphasizing accountability for past atrocities.
