Though, the sugarcane threshing target has already been achieved at the Zeal Bangla Sugar Mill of Dewanganj in Jamalpur district, the sugar production target may not be achieved this year due to lack of courage to the farmers, farmer sources said.

The authorities concerned demanded that as huge quantities of sugarcane are yet to harvest from the fields, the possibility of achieving sugar production target has not yet been finished. They still believe that, the production target is possible to fulfill, if the sugarcanes are fetched to the mill for sugar production. With the aim, farmers are being instigated.

According to mill sources, the sugarcane threshing and sugar production activities started on November 28. But till last Wednesday (February 18), 2,620 tons of sugarcane was threshed compared to the target by 82 days. The target of 4,900 tons of sugar was set to be produced by threshing 70,000 tons of sugarcane in the current 2025-2026 season. Although, the sugarcane threshing was more than the target till last Wednesday, the sugar production target has not been achieved so far. Till Wednesday, the mill has produced 4,485 tons of sugar. That is, the sugar production is 415 tons less than the target.

Tariqul Alam, Managing Director of the mill said, “The cultivation and production of sugarcane have been increased. But farmers have lost their interest to supply their sugarcane to the mill for sugar production due to manifold reasons. We however are trying to encourage them to supply their sugarcane to the mill to achieve the production target.”
