Joypurhat Correspondent:

A local court sentenced 11 people to life imprisonment for killing college teacher Ali Hasan Babu in Joypurhat. In addition, they were fined Tk 50,000 each, in default, they will have to serve another 2 years of imprisonment.

Judge Nurul Islam of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 of Joypurhat handed down the verdict on Wednesday afternoon.

The convicts are Asadul, Mujibur Rahman, Tofazzal Hossain, Abdul Hannan, Anichur, Kalam, Khairul, Babu, Sohail, Morshedul Hasan Moshiur and Azizul. Among them, all are absconding except Morshedul Hasan Moshiur and Azizul.

According to case details, Ali Hasan Babu, son of Abul Kashem Mandal of Kankra village of Panchbibi Upazila of Joypurhat, was a teacher in the economics department of Shahargachi Adarsha Degree College, Gaibandha. Besides teaching, he used to trade in various stocks in Paikardaria village. On the night of June 17, 2009, he left for home from the business establishment.

On the way, the accused killed Ali Hasan Babu by twisting a jute rope around his neck and wounding him with weapons  near Kangra Bridge and fled. Later his body was recovered in bloody condition. In this incident, the elder brother of the victim, Abu Bakkar, filed a murder case in the Panchbibi police station as the plaintiff.
