3 arrested for extorting in name of Sirajganj SP

Police have arrested three people on charges of defrauding traders on WhatsApp by using the name and picture of the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Sirajganj. The arrested are Sohel Mia, 34, son of Amjad of Krishnapur Namapara area of ​​Sherpur police station, Badsha Akand, 50, son of late Ramzan Akand of Khanpur area of ​​the same police station and Md. Ripon, 22, a resident of Khanpur Paschimpara area.

In a press release on Monday (March 16), Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) of the district Md. Hafizur Rahman confirmed this information.

According to the police, the accused created fake accounts on WhatsApp using two mobile numbers. There, they used to claim money from saree and lungi traders by pretending to be the Superintendent of Police of Sirajganj district, promising to give them ‘Sanmani’ on the occasion of Eid. After the matter came to the notice of the police, their location were identified with the help of information technology.

Later, three frauds were arrested in a raid. An Itel Android mobile phone, a Samsung phone and Tk 3,000 in cash were recovered from them.

According to the police, during initial interrogation, the arrested people confessed that they had not only used the names and pictures of police officers, but also tried to extort money from businessmen and ordinary people by using the identities of government officials at different times.

The police said that legal action is being taken against them in this incident.
