Sirajganj Municipality has taken an initiative to provide license to 5000 rickshaws. Not only that, action would be taken against illegal rickshaws after completion of license providing, said concerned officials.
Meanwhile, licenses of five rickshaws were handed over by Mohammad Tofazzal Hossain, Administrator of Sirajganj Municipality and also Deputy Director of the Local Government on Monday through a simple programme.
During the programme, Md Hannan Khan, License Inspector (current in charge) of Sirajganj Municipality said, “We have taken an initiative to provide about 5000 licenses to the new license seekers. The license form will be available at the municipality office from Tuesday.”
He further said, “The license fee has been determined at Tk 500 in the current FY against previous rate at Tk 700. Besides, the driving license fee has also been determined at Tk 150 instead of Tk 200 for the sake of rickshaw pullers and owners.”
Sources said, over 5000 rickshaws including battery run rickshaws ply on different roads in the town without license. Besides, some rickshaws enter into the town daily from outsides causing immense traffic gridlock on the roads. Due to uncontrolled traffic on roads, commuters suffer immensely during the office hours. To reduce the sufferings and bring the town’s traffic in a system, the authorities concerned of Sirajganj Municipality have taken the measure of providing license to the rickshaw pullers and owners.
Executive Engineer of Sirajganj Municipality Nurnabi Sarker, License Inspector Maruf Ahmed, Inspector Rashidul Hasan Shahin, Slum Development Officer Shah Alam, Acting President of Rickshaw Owner Association Polash Bhuiyan, its General Secretary Chand Mian and Finance Secretary Nazrul Islam among others were present in the event, while the licenses were distributed among the five rickshaws’ owners.
