A Dhaka court has sent three men to jail in a case filed over the attempted murder of a motorcyclist who was struck in the head with a brick while riding through the capital’s Kafrul area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin issued the order today (12 June) following a hearing.

The accused are Md Parvez, Anwar Hossain Babu, and Md Faisal alias Kalu.

Earlier, the three accused were produced before the court. Police sought an order to keep them in custody, after which the court sent them to jail.

The defence did not file any petition on behalf of the accused during the hearing.

According to the case statement, the victim, Rafi, was returning home on his motorcycle at around 1:20am on Tuesday (9 June). When he reached the Ibrahimpur area under Kafrul Police Station, miscreants allegedly struck the right side of his head with a brick due to a prior dispute.

He sustained severe bleeding injuries to the head and fell onto the road from his motorcycle.

Following the incident, Rafi’s uncle, Nur Hossain, filed a case with Kafrul Police Station, accusing the suspects of attempted murder.

Md Parvez was arrested yesterday (11 June) from an area near the Indian border under Dhobaura Police Station in Mymensingh district, while Babu was arrested from the Ibrahimpur area. Separately, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Faisal during an operation in the Kafrul area.

Speaking at a briefing at the DMP Media Centre earlier in the day, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Mirpur Division) Md Mostak Sarkar said the attack stemmed from a dispute between Rafi and the accused over their visits to his house.

According to the deputy commissioner, Parvez had previously lived as a tenant in Rafi’s house and became acquainted with him during that time. Parvez and his associates were allegedly involved in drug trafficking in the area, which led to disputes with Rafi.

Even after moving out, they continued visiting Rafi’s house and loitering in front of it, which he objected to.

Mostak said an argument broke out between Rafi, Parvez and Kalu on the evening before the attack. Following the altercation, they allegedly threatened to “teach him a lesson”.

At around 1am the following night, Parvez, Kalu, Babu and another suspect, Amin, allegedly waited in the Purba Shewrapara area.

When Rafi arrived on his motorcycle, Amin attempted to stop him and, when he did not stop, Parvez allegedly struck him on the head with a brick.

The deputy commissioner also said the suspects later tried to mislead people by claiming that a brick had fallen from above and injured Rafi. They then transported him in an auto-rickshaw and abandoned him in the Ibrahimpur area before fleeing.

Mostak added that both Parvez and Kalu have multiple drug-related cases filed against them at different police stations across Dhaka.

He also said investigators are examining whether there were any financial or other motives behind the attack and that another suspect, Amin, remains at large.
