Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of deposed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has expressed his willingness to enter Bangladesh political arena, following the reported attacks on Awami League men and minority groups.

“I am ready to join politics if it is necessary to save the party, its leaders, workers and the country,” Joy, who is also an unpaid IT adviser to the former prime minister, told the Times of India in an exclusive interview on Thursday.

However, this very IT expert has previously expressed his unwillingness to enter Bangladesh’s political arena when his mother was the prime minister.

“I never had any political wills. But due to the ongoing situation, I have to be active for the sake of the party and I am now at the forefront,” said Joy told the Indian newspaper over phone from his residence in Washington DC.

Regarding the upcoming general election to be held under the interim government, he said, “I am confident that the Awami League will participate in the election, and we can win. Our party has the largest number of supporters in Bangladesh.”

Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave the country on August 5 in the face of a widespread student movement demanding quota reform.

Since then, Joy has been active on social media, aiming to strengthen the party’s leaders and activists.
