1,206 educational institutions damaged in 7 flood-hit dists

The recent floods that heavily inundated parts of Bangladesh have caused significant damage to the infrastructures of 1,206 schools and colleges across seven southeastern districts.

According to a post-flood report published on Monday by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE), 565 of these institutions are in such a vulnerable state that classes could not be resumed there yet.

The total estimated damage to educational institutions stands at Tk37 crore.  The report highlights that 844 of the affected schools are in the Chattogram region, 334 are in the Cumilla region, and 28 are in the Sylhet region.

In the Chattogram region alone, the damages amount to Tk24.94 crore, affecting 844 institutions. Although classes resumed in 618 of these schools, 226 institutions were still unable to continue their educational activities.

Noakhali district in the Chattogram region has been the hardest hit, with 563 educational institutions suffering damages worth Tk12.26 crore.

Feni district follows, with 281 institutions damaged, amounting to Tk11.65 crore, while Chattogram district reports damage to 25 institutions, totaling Tk1.03 crore.

In the Cumilla region, 334 educational institutions suffered damages worth Tk12.15 crore. Out of these, classes resumed in only 20 institutions, while 314 remain unfit for educational activities.

In this region, 54 institutions in Lakshmipur, 40 in Chandpur, and 240 in Cumilla district were affected.

In the Cumilla district, classes are ongoing in 17 affected institutions, while 223 are unfit for continuing educational activities. In Chandpur, classes resumed in three flood-hit institutions, but 37 were still unsuitable for holding classes.

In the Sylhet region, 28 educational institutions sustained damage worth Tk28 lakh, yet classes continue in all 28 institutions.
