A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted a three-day remand for former railway minister Nurul Islam Sujan in the case of shooting and killing student Imran Hasan during the mass upsurge in July.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shaheen Reza passed the order after police produced him before the court with a five-day remand plea, said Shah Alam Miah, an investigating officer of the case.

Meanwhile, Nurul Islam’s lawyer applied for bail, seeking cancellation of the remand, which was opposed by the prosecution. After hearing both sides, the court granted a three-day remand.

During the remand hearing, with the court’s permission, Nurul Islam Sujan said: “In my entire life, I have never been involved in any case, except for this one. Not even when I was in the opposition. There is nothing mentioned in the case other than my name. The plaintiff doesn’t know anyone. I was admitted to the hospital. At least grant me the opportunity to receive treatment.”

After hearing both sides, the court ordered that he be given medical treatment according to prison rules.

On Monday evening, Nurul Islam Sujan was arrested from Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka.

During the recent anti-discrimination student movement on August 5, Awami League leaders, activists, and police forces opened indiscriminate fire, leading to the shooting and death of Imran Hasan.

On September 1, the victim’s mother, Kohinoor Akhter, filed a case naming 298 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Sujan.
