Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Tuesday said the discharge of trainee sub-inspectors is not a new precedent and there is no political reason behind the dismissal.

Refraining from giving a detailed explanation, the adviser told the reporters at the secretariat that there are also precedents of discharging the entire batch on the day before the passing-out ceremony.

While replying to a question, he said the Bangladesh Police Academy can clarify the issue for taking such a step.

In a stringent measure, 250 cadet SIs have been dismissed from the police academy in Sardah, Rajshahi due to violations of disciplinary codes.

This order was given in a letter signed by M Tarek bin Rashid, superintendent of police (admin and logistics) of the academy, on behalf of its principal on Monday.

Out of a total of 801 cadet SIs undergoing training at the academy, 250 SIs were found guilty of breaches severe enough to warrant their dismissal. The training was initially scheduled to conclude on 4 November.

This incident occurred in the wake of rising calls for police reform following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on 5 August in the face of the mass uprising.

Home Adviser Jahangir Alam also said new advertisement has already been published (in various national dailies) and fresh police members will be recruited from there.
