Mirpur-14 clash: 2 gunshot wounded RMG workers in DMCH

Garment workers clashed with joint forces on Thursday morning at Mirpur No. 14 of the capital. At one point, two garment workers were shot. Agitated garment workers set fire to a police vehicle and an army vehicle.

The two garment workers who were shot are Al Amin (18) and Juma Akhtar (15). They have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Eyewitnesses and the police said that around 8:30 in the morning, several hundred workers of ready-made garment factories protested on Mirpur-14 Kachukhet road for various demands. At that time they blocked the road. At one stage they clashed with the members of the joint forces. The clash lasted for two and a half hours from 8:30 am to 11 pm.

Clashes spread from Mirpur No. 14 to Kachukhet. At this time, the traffic of the connecting roads with Mirpur road number 14 was stopped. At one stage, the police beat the garment workers with batons. The angry workers vandalized an army vehicle and a police vehicle and set it on fire.

The police fired tear gas shells and bullets. Two garment workers were shot. Al Amin was shot in both shoulders and Jhuma’s right ankle. They have been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

When the situation calmed down around 11:00 am, the traffic flow gradually returned to normal.
