Television presenter Farzana Brownia has withdrawn the case filed in a Dhaka court against Shykh Seraj, Head of News at “Channel i”, on fraud allegations.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman dismissed the case following the plaintiff’s decision to withdraw.
According to court sources, on October 2, TV presenter Farzana Brownia submitted a withdrawal request for the case.
She appeared in court on an unscheduled date to testify that the matter had been resolved amicably.
The judge recorded her statement and scheduled the dismissal order for Tuesday, granting approval to withdraw and close the case.
On September 25, Brownia filed a case against five individuals, including Shykh Seraj on charges of fraud.
The other accused in the case are Zahid Uddin Mahmud Mamun, Mukit Majumder Babu, Abdur Rashid Majumder Parvez, and Riaz Ahmed Khan.
In the complaint, Farzana Brownia mentioned that she had joined Channel i under the accused as a manager (marketing) with a salary of Tk100,000.
She also served as the host and director of a program called Swarnakishoree. However, in 2018, during the quota reform movement, after speaking in favour of the students, she was suddenly banned from the organization on October 11.
When she protested verbally, the accused informed her that she would continue to receive her salary on a monthly basis until a written dismissal was issued.
Accordingly, she is owed Tk79 lakh in unpaid wages from October 2018 to September 2024.
When she sent a legal notice through her lawyer for the unpaid dues, the accused did not respond. Instead, they threatened her and demanded Tk50 crore in extortion.
In her complaint, Brownia also alleged that all of the accused are involved in Awami League politics.
