Unidentified miscreants hacked a ward committee secretary of the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) to death in Rajbari on Tuesday night.

The incident took place in Beradanga area of Rajbari Sadar Upazila.

Deceased Tanvir Sheikh, 22, was the son of Babu Sikder from the Binodpur area of Sadar Upazila and the general secretary of the ward Chhatra League.

Though the committee’s term had expired, Tanvir had continued to serve in the position since December 23, 2020, said Rajbari Municipality Chhatra League president Arfanul Haque Antor.

Tanvir was a second-year Higher Secondary student at Dr. Abul Hossain University College in the district.

Locals said Tanvir was attacked around 9:00 pm near his home. Four assailants indiscriminately hacked him for about 5-6 minutes. His intestines protrude from his abdomen. The attackers escaped the spot leaving him in a very poor condition.

Family members took Tanvir to the Rajbari Sadar Hospital. As his condition was critical, he was transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. He died on the way around 10:00 pm.

Family sources said that Tanvir was attacked when he went to a nearby shop to buy eggs.

A family member, who wished to remain anonymous, said that Tanvir was killed due to political rivalry. He stated that Tanvir had been receiving threats and had refrained from going to college for a long time. Recently, his family sent him to Bandarban for refreshment. He returned home on Tuesday evening.

Additional Superintendent of Police in Rajbari, Sharif Al Rajib, confirmed Tanvir’s death and said that the police are investigating the matter.
