The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) has launched a separate pink-coloured women-only bus service to ensure safer and more comfortable travel for working women in urban areas. The buses will be operated by female drivers and conductors.

The women-only bus service was inaugurated on Tuesday (18 August) morning at the BRTC Dhaka Truck Depot premises in Tejgaon, Dhaka.

At the inauguration ceremony, Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said the pink bus service, operated by female drivers and conductors, had been introduced as part of the government’s efforts to implement its election manifesto.

He said the initiative would not only ensure safer and more comfortable public transport for women but also play an important role in increasing women’s participation in the public transport sector.

Among those attending the event as special guests were State Minister for Railways and the Road Transport and Highways Division Habibur Rashid, Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary Dr Mohammad Ziaul Haque, and Women and Children’s Affairs Ministry Secretary Yasmin.

BRTC Chairman (Additional Secretary) Abdul Latif Molla chaired the programme.
