A court in Kushtia Wednesday sentenced three accused to death for killing Sanwara Begum and her son Raj while robbing a house in Daulatpur in the district. Along with this, the court ordered the accused to pay a fine of Tk 50,000 and in default of payment, they have been ordered to undergo rigorous imprisonment for one more year.

Judge Sohani Pushan of Kushtia Additional District and Sessions Judge Court handed over the verdict at around 12:30 pm on Wednesday (November 20).

The three accused were present in the court when the verdict was announced. After the verdict, they were sent to the district jail under police guard.

Those sentenced to death are – Ali Akbar, son of Imran Hossain of Sonaikandi village of Kushtia Daulatpur upazila, Lalchand Mandal, son of late Shahidul Islam of the same village, and Hanif Mollah, son of Sekendar Mollah of Joaddarpara area of ​​the same upazila.

Arup Raihan, bench assistant of the court, confirmed this.

According to case details, Sanwara Begum and her son Raj were sleeping in their house on the night of 17 November 2019 at the Sonaikandi village of Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia. At that time, the accused entered their residence to commit robbery. Sensing their presence, Sanwara Begum woke up and tried to resist and screamed, however, she was strangulated to death. In the same way, they also killed Sanwara’s son Raj. The accused then wrapped a muffler around Sanwara’s neck and a towel around Raj’s neck to ensure their death. At that time, the accused robbed various items including mobile phones. The deceased Sanwara Begum is the wife of Manik of Sonaikandi village. Sanwara and his son Raj lived in that house.

In this incident, Parvina Khatun filed a murder case at the Daulatpur police station on 18 November 2019. After investigating the case, the investigating officer submitted the chargesheet to the court on December 27 of the same year. After that, the court fixed the date of the verdict after the testimony of the witness in this case. On the fixed date, the judge of the court ordered this punishment of the accused in the case.

Bench assistant Arup Raihan said that three people have been sentenced to death for killing a mother and son while committing a robbery. The accused were present in the court when the verdict was announced.
