Police have arrested a man – known as a Jubo League activist – for firing 28 rounds of bullets indiscriminately at students during the anti-discrimination movement in Chattogram on 4 August.
The gunman, Touhidul Islam, was arrested on Friday (22 November) in a police operation in the Kamalnagar area of Satkhira Sadar.
Deputy Commissioner (crime and operations) Mohammad Rois Uddin confirmed the matter at a press briefing at Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) media centre today (23 November).
Touhidul, also known as Hari Touhid or Farid, was previously seen brandishing weapons and firing during the anti-discrimination protests in the Chandgaon and Bahaddarhat areas of the city.
However, police could not officially verify Touhidul’s political affiliations.
Replying to a query, Rois Uddin said, “We could not find Touhidul’s political affiliation. He is a professional criminal and mugger with cases of murder, weapons use, and extortion filed against him.”
The official said Touhidul is accused in 12 cases across various police stations under CMP, including five over murder charges and others over violence, extortion, drugs, and robbery.
“Touhidul has admitted to firing on protesters on 4 August in Chandgaon, using a ‘Pakistani shooter gun’. Our operations to recover the weapon and additional ammunition are ongoing,” he said.
