Kemar Roach rattled Bangladesh early, but poor catching by the West Indies allowed the visitors to finish the rain-affected opening day of the Kingston Test at 69 for 2.

Shadman Islam stood firm with an unbeaten 50, while Shahadat Hossain was on 12.

The match began five hours late due to a wet outfield at Sabina Park. Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz chose to bat in the 30 overs available, but the visitors lost two wickets within the first half-hour.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy was dismissed for 2, caught behind by a diving Joshua Da Silva. Roach then removed Mominul Haque for a duck with a sharp delivery that swung away after pitching, marking his 50th wicket against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s recovery was aided by poor West Indies fielding. Shadman was dropped twice—on 15 by Alick Athanaze at slip and on 35 by Kraigg Brathwaite at cover. Shahadat also survived a comical drop involving Athanaze and Kavem Hodge.

The slow outfield, softened by rain, limited run-scoring.

Shadman struck three fours and a six in his 100-ball knock, while Shahadat edged one four.

Despite the sluggish conditions and early setbacks, Bangladesh will take confidence from Shadman’s composed innings heading into day two.
