Nine detainees have been shown arrested, and eight others have been placed on remand in connection with two separate cases filed over the violence at Chattogram court premises and the killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif.

Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam on Monday passed an order to show nine detainees as arrested in the lawyer Saiful murder case after hearing a petition in this regard.  Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) Mofizur Rahman has confirmed the news.

The arrestees are Sumit Das, Nayan Das, Gagan Das, Bishal Das, Rajib Bhattacharya, Sonu Methor, Rumit Das, and Durlabh Das.

Another court granted a seven-day remand for eight other accused in the case filed over attacks on police and obstructing them from discharging their duties during the Chattogram court violence.

Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakar Siddique granted the remand after hearing a police petition, said Assistant Public Prosecutor Advocate Riaz Uddin.

The accused are Partho Chakraborty, Apurba Shil, Ujjwal Das, Apu Chandra Saha, Niloy Das, Dhrubo Das, Md Delwar Hossain, and Md Nuru.

Govt prosecutor resigns amid protest

Additional Public Prosecutor Nezam Uddin on Monday filed a bail petition for two accused in the case filed over attacks on police.

As the news spread, lawyers staged a demonstration at the court premises.

In the wake of the protest, Nezam resigned from his position, admitting fault.

On 26 November, a Chattogram court denied the bail petition of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson for Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote and former leader of ISKCON, in a sedition case and ordered his imprisonment.

Lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was hacked to death, and 20 others were injured after supporters of Chinmoy clashed with police following the court order.

On 30 November, Saiful’s father, Jamal Uddin, filed a murder case with Kotwali police station, accusing a total of 46 individuals.

On the other hand, his elder brother, Khan-e Alam, filed another case against 116 individuals over the attacks and vandalism targeting lawyers.

Meanwhile, police filed three separate cases against 76 identified and 1,400 unidentified individuals on charges of attacking police.
