Accusing the Awami League of exiling democracy and destroying the dreams of the martyred intellectuals, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has underscored the need for establishing the rule of law, independent judiciary and politics of pluralism in the country.

Soon after the country’s independence, Awami League unmasked its real face and started snatching people’s democratic rights following the footsteps of the Pakistani occupational forces, he said.

It started weakening the country’s independence and sovereignty gradually and destroyed the dream of martyred intellectuals in building a democratic state and society, Tarique in a speech marking the Martyred Intellectual Day.

Upholding the tradition of the misdeeds, the proficient successors of the fascists Awami League indulged in criminal activities, including enforced disappearance and killing people in crossfire to create hindrances on the way of building a united and prosperous nation, he said.

It also materialised one-party rule in the country instead of ensuring the country’s democratic progress and economic prosperity, he said in the speech.

“Amid the changing political situation, we will have to be reunited to engage in exercising real democracy to restore the rule of law, independent judiciary and politics of pluralism in the country after being inspired by the dream of the martyred intellectuals,” he said.

Showing his profound respect to the martyred intellectuals, he said that Martyr Intellectuals Day is a mournful day in the history of the nation.

Immortal intellectuals are the nation’s best children, who aspired to see a prosperous and proud nation. They envisioned a democratic state free from exploitation and based on justice.

However, the collaborators of the occupying forces carried out a planned massacre on the eve of the country’s final victory to turn Bangladesh into a nation free from intellectual strength.

“On this mournful day, I urge the people of the nation—let us work together to build Bangladesh in light of the dream dreamed by the martyred intellectuals. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the martyred intellectuals,” he said.
