Flower farmers in Savar’s Golap Gram are busy tending to their fields.

While flowers are in demand throughout the year, sales see a significant boost during special occasions like Victory Day.

Despite a slight decline in cultivation last year, this season’s better yields have raised farmers’ hopes for higher sales.

A visit to the area reveals farmers working day and night to maintain their flower gardens in Golap Gram, Birulia, Savar.

Special days like December 16 (Victory Day), New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and February 21 (International Mother Language Day) drive up the demand for flowers exponentially.

As in previous years, farmers are focusing on their gardens with expectations of extra profits for Victory Day.

This year, favourable weather has further enhanced the yield, and farmers anticipate even better results.

Already, visitors and flower traders from Dhaka and surrounding areas are flocking to the gardens.

Mahmud Hossain, who came from Tongi to buy flowers in Golap Gram, said: “I came to this place from Tongi to purchase flowers because the quality here is excellent and prices are reasonable, which benefits our business. That’s why we buy flowers from here.”

Jerin Khan, visiting Golap Gram from Dhaka’s Hazaribagh, said: “I came from Hazaribagh. December 16th is approaching, and since it’s winter, I decided to visit Golap Gram. It’s a beautiful place, and many others are also visiting to enjoy the sights.”

Another visitor, Sanjida Sharmin, said: “Winter has set in, so I came here to explore. I’ve already placed an order for flowers for December 16.”

Farmers, too, are optimistic about the season, citing fewer pest infestations and higher yields.

Rokib Hossain, a flower farmer, said: “Since December 16th is Victory Day and Christmas is also approaching, the demand for flowers is increasing. The yield has been good, which has kept us very busy.”*

Another farmer, Zahirul Islam, said: “Our roses have yielded well this year, better than last year. Last year we faced pest issues, but this year, that’s not the case. With December 16th coming up, prices are gradually rising. The market is looking promising, and we have plenty of flowers in our gardens.”

This year, 230 hectares of land in Golap Gram have been dedicated to flower cultivation.

The Department of Agricultural Extension is providing regular guidance to ensure increased yield and pest-free flowers.

Alvir Rahman, Savar Upazila Agriculture Officer, said: “The Savar Upazila Agriculture Office works with flower farmers throughout the year. We distribute leaflets and posters for their guidance. This year, 250 hectares of land have been cultivated with roses, while a total of 305 hectares have been used for flower farming overall. Farmers are optimistic about profits, especially around December 16. The Department of Agriculture continues to provide them with necessary advice and support.”
