The country’s remittance inflow has increased 26% since 5 August, when dictator Sheikh Hasina fled the country in a mass uprising, said Law Adviser Asif Nazrul on Wednesday.

The expatriates are leaving no leaf unturned in their support for the interim government, the adviser said expressing gratitude to them for their economic contributions.

The expatriates sending remittances are the economy’s driving force, he noted in a discussion session arranged at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on the occasion of the International Migrants Day. The event also marked the upcoming 30 December National Expatriates’ Day.

At the discussion session, the law adviser pledged to work towards resolving all the troubles and hassles expatriates face, including passport-related issues, high foreign travel costs and the lack of right to vote in national elections.

The government is also working to increase the supply of skilled workforce to Europe.

The fascist Awami League leaders siphoned off large amounts of foreign currencies sent by the expatriates during their 15-year autocratic rule, Asif Nazrul alleged.

“Islami Bank was the favourite destination among expatriates to send remittances, but Awami League and its allies looted it extensively.”
