Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast one to two moderate to severe cold waves over west, northwest, north and northeastern parts of the country, along with two to three mild to moderate cold waves elsewhere over the country in January.

According to the BMD’s monthly outlook for January published on yesterday, day and night temperatures this month are likely to be above normal across the country. However, due to the small difference between day and night temperatures, cold weather may intensify.

BMD measures mild cold waves at 8.1-10 degrees Celsius, moderate at 6.1-8 degrees Celsius, and severe at 4.1-6 degrees Celsius.

The monthly outlook for January also says that moderate or dense fog may occur at north, northeastern, west, southwestern and central parts of the country and river basin areas, and light or moderate fog may occur elsewhere over the country.

Air navigation, inland river transport and road communication may be disrupted temporarily due to dense fog, it says, adding that average daily sunshine may be between 5-7 hours this month.

Meanwhile, one to two low pressure systems are likely to form over south Bay of Bengal this month, and one of these systems system may intensify into a depression.

Rainfall is likely to be below normal over the country, adds the BMD monthly outlook.
