Two businessmen were attacked on Elephant Road, reportedly by unidentified assailants, leaving them injured and prompting a police investigation.

According to police the incident may be linked to a committee election. A case has been filed regarding the incident.

On Saturday, Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the matter.

The victims were identified as Wahidul Hasan Dipu, president of the Elephant Road Computer Society, and Ehteshamul Haque, joint general secretary.

Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam said: “An election was held there a month ago. There had been disputes related to the election among them. We suspect the incident might have occurred due to the election or other reasons. Until the suspects are arrested, the exact cause cannot be determined. We are working on it.”

According to the police, around 11pm on Friday, several youths were stationed in front of Multiplan Center. They were dressed in winter clothing and wore masks.

Suddenly, the youths brought out machetes and sharp weapons, attacking a car and repeatedly hacking a person outside the vehicle.

The businessmen suspect that the attack was motivated by market dominance, territorial control, or business rivalry.

A video of the incident has been circulated on social media.

Md Nazrul Islam Hazar, Vice-President of the Elephant Road Computer Traders Welfare Association, said: “We had an event at night. After the event, unidentified assailants suddenly launched the attack.”

Demanding justice for the attack on the two business leaders, Elephant Road computer traders protested and formed a human chain, keeping the market closed from Saturday noon.

They gathered on the road in front of the market, demanding the identification and immediate arrest of the attackers.

In this regard, New Market Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohsen Uddin said: “It is not yet known who or why the attack was carried out. The matter is under investigation.”
