The fact-checking body Rumor Scanner has debunked a video falsely claiming that Bangladeshi citizens are destroying crops on Indian agricultural land.

Indian media outlet Republic Bangla recently circulated a video on social media, alleging that “some Bangladeshis have infiltrated the Malda-Sukdevpur border of India and destroyed agricultural crops in the dark of night.”

In its investigation, the fact-checking watchdog found that the video in question actually depicts farmers in Meherpur destroying their own cauliflowers due to frustration over not receiving fair prices, not Bangladeshis infiltrating Indian territory.

The original video was traced to a post published on the Facebook page of Maasranga Television on January 1, captioned, “Farmers of Meherpur are destroying cauliflower in the fields after not getting the desired price.”

Analysis revealed that the video shows Meherpur farmers destroying their cauliflowers out of anger and frustration over the low prices offered.

Farmers interviewed in the video confirmed that they destroyed the crops because they could not get a fair price.

A detailed video report published on the Facebook page of Nagorik TV on January 2 corroborated this information, saying that the video was filmed in Gangni upazila of Meherpur.

The report highlighted that cauliflower was being sold for only Tk1 per piece, prompting the frustrated farmers to destroy their crops in protest.

Additionally, multiple media outlets in Bangladesh have published similar reports, confirming that farmers in Meherpur destroyed their cauliflowers due to dissatisfaction with the market price.
