Inspector Md Arshad Hossain of Shahbagh police station, who was seen covering a student’s mouth during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement last year, has been sent to jail by the International Crimes Tribunal.

Prosecutor BM Sultan Mahmud confirmed the information on Wednesday. “Inspector Arshad Hossain, arrested in cases filed over mass killings and crimes against humanity during the protests, has been sent to jail by the tribunal.”

On July 31, during the “March for Justice” program of the movement, Arshad was seen covering the mouth of Nahidul Islam, a student of New Model Degree College in Dhaka.

The image went viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism.

On August 18, the Shahbagh police officer was suspended.

According to the suspension order, despite being a member of a disciplined police force, his unprofessional actions had led to negative public reactions and harmed the reputation of the police. Consequently, he was suspended.
