Police in a raid arrested Arifa Khatun, Director of an NGO named ‘Premier Islami Sanchay O Rindan Samabay Samity Limited’ and also Assistant Teacher of Satkhira Maaskhola Government Primary School in connection with the embezzlement of about Tk 3 crore from clients.

Sources said, police raided a house next to the Mayerbari temple in Old Satkhira under Satkhira Sadar Upazila on Wednesday night and arrested her, while she kept herself in hidden. At that time, sensing the presence of police, her husband Kamrul Islam, Manager of the NGO managed to flee the scene.

Earlier, the police raided her own luxurious house located north of the Ansar VDP camp in Old Satkhira.

She was arrested in a case filed with Satkhira police station by Rina Parvin, daughter of Bir Freedom Fighter Azizur Rahman of Khejurbaria village in Parulia of Debhata upazila in the district.

NGO workers arrested the NGO director Arifa Khatun in a case filed by Rina Parveen, daughter of freedom fighter Azizur Rahman of Khejurbaria village of Parulia in Debhata upazila, at Satkhira police station.

Arifa was made main accused in the case, while her husband Kamrul Islam, son of Abul Hossain of Kakbasia village in Ashashuni upazila has been made second accused.

According to the sources, despite being a school teacher, Arifa grabbed the approval of the NGO after managing some unscrupulous officials of concerned department on the blessing of the then Awami League leaders. Then she started Multi-level marketing (MLM) in different illegal means.

Thus, they embezzled about Tk 30 from more than 200 field level members under the umbrella of previous Awami League government.
