Relatives of patients attacked and vandalized the emergency unit of Satkhira Sadar Hospital as they were deprived of proper services from the hospital authorities on Saturday (May 3). The agitating relatives of the patients beat the on duty doctors and staffs up.
Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Satkhira Sadar Hospital Faisal Ahmed said that at around 9:30 am, a patient named Shahin from Labsa area of the town came to the emergency department with a head injury. After giving primary aid, he was sent indoors. The patient’s relatives became angry when they did not find the doctor in charge there. Later, they returned to the emergency department and got engaged in an argument with the staffs. At one stage of the altercation, they carried out attack and vandalism.
Panic spread among the doctors and employees of the hospital. The attackers beat and injured the on-duty office staff Farid, Masud, Nurse Sohana Parvin, Marjina Khatun and a person named Tanvir Hasan.
The injured Tanvir Hasan said, suddenly I saw that relatives of the patient started beating the hospital staffs. At that time, he started recording the video on his mobile phone. At this, one of them got angry and punched him on the nose. This broke the bone in his nose.
Satkhira Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Abdus Salam said, after the incident, medical services in the emergency department were temporarily suspended. Later, upon receiving information, police and army members arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. But, the attackers managed to flee.
Nurse Marjina Khatun filed a case with Satkhira Sadar Police Station.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satkhira Sadar Police Station Shaminul Haque said that the police have already inspected the scene. Efforts are being made to identify the attackers by CCTV footage.
However, locals claim that the person who led the attack is Sohel Ahmed Manik, the leader of the volunteer party of Satkhira Sadar Upazila. People concerned at all levels of the district, including healthcare professionals, condemn the incident.
