Five people, including three members of a family, were killed and three others sustained injuries as a bus hit an ambulance on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in Nimtoli area of Munshiganj early Thursday.

Three of the victims were identified as Abdus Samad Fakir, his son Billah Fakir and daughter Afsana of Mithapukur in Kishoreganj, while the identities of the rest two could not be known immediately.

Abdul Kader Jilani, officer-in-charge of Hashra Highway Police Station, said the family was travelling to Dhaka by an ambulance as Billah’s pregnant wife, Rozina Begum, required medical treatment.

Suddenly, a tyre of the ambulance, carrying 10 people, got damaged when it reached Nimtoli area and some of its passengers were waiting beside the road, said the OC.

A speedy bus of Golden Line Paribahan hit the ambulance when its driver was altering the tyre around 12:30 pm, leaving one man dead on the spot and critically injuring seven others.

The injured passengers were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where four of them succumbed to their injuries.
