Sharp rising of the Jamuna water looms flood fear among the people of low-lying areas in five upazilas of Sirajganj district.
Meanwhile, many low-lying areas of the district have been flooded with the swelling of Jamuna river.
If the rainfall is continued, much more areas may be engulfed with the flood water.
WDB sources said, water level in the Jamuna river is rising sharply at different points in five upazilas-Sirajganj Sadar, Kazipur, Belkuchi, Chowhali and Shahzadpur.
The water of Jamuna near Sirajganj point has been increased at about 83cm in the last 24 hours. However, the water of the mighty river was following about 245cm below the danger mark.
As a result, low-lying areas are going to underwater. Although, tension is mounting among the locals over the possibility of flood, the Water Development Board has dismissed any immediate threat.
Sources said, sudden rising of water levels has sparked early flood fears among residents of char areas in 35 unions across five upazilas of the district. Many in these low-lying communities are also deeply worried about the potential submergence of their farmland and crops.
Md. Nazmul Hossain, Sub-Divisional Engineer of the Sirajganj Water Development Board said that, “The Jamuna has started swelling due to recent heavy rainfall and onrush of water from upstream. The rate of increase over the past 24 hours has been unusually high.”
“The trend of rising water in the river Jamuna will continue for another two days,” he stated.
Ramzan Ali, a resident of Kawakhola Char said, “Water has already reached our home due to swelling of Jamuna river. Many crops including vegetables of different Chars have gone under water, while many people are shifting to safer places to protect them and their valuable goods and domestic animals from potential floods.”
