The Election Commission (EC) has completed the process of registering Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, as a voter.
As part of the registration process for obtaining a National Identity Card (NID), her biometric data — including a photograph and fingerprints — was collected. The EC confirmed this development on Monday (June 23).
When contacted, Akhtar Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the EC Secretariat, said that Dr Zubaida Rahman’s information was gathered as part of the ongoing voter list update, and her registration has been finalised.
The creation of a photo-based voter list began in 2008. At that time, both Tarique Rahman and Dr Zubaida Rahman were residing in London, having left Bangladesh on September 11, 2008. Since then, they had not returned to the country and were not included in the voter roll.
On May 6 this year, Dr Zubaida Rahman returned to Bangladesh alongside BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who had been abroad for medical treatment. Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, EC officials completed her data collection and registration process in Dhaka. She later returned to London on June 5.
