A court in Sirajganj on Monday sentenced a man to death and four others to life term imprisonment for killing a Jubo League leader in Sirajganj town in 2018.

The court also fined Tk 50,000 each, in default; they will have to serve six more months in Jail.

The convicted, who gets death, is Tariqul Islam Tarique, son of Abdus Samad in Ranigram of Sirajganj municipality and four others, who get life term, are Selim Reza and Badal Sheikh, son of late Kashem Ali, Nazrul Islam, son of Abdul Quddus and Saidul Islam Khan, son of Saiful Islam Khan of the same area.

Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman, Judge of Additional District and Session Judge Court in Sirajganj handed down the verdict in presence of the convicts at a packed courtroom.

According to the prosecution brief, a long standing dispute had been going on between the victim Golam Mostafa and accused over social, political, business and several other issues as the deceased Golam Mostafa at that time had been serving as President of Ward No. 7 Jubo League in Sirajganj municipality.

Centering the issue, the accused hacked him to death, when he was returning to home from a local mosque after offering Fazr prayer on October 3, 2018.

Victim’s wife Shikha Khatun lodged a case with Sirajganj Sadar police station in this connection accusing 20 to 25 persons with names and unnamed. After an investigation, IO of the case submitted charge sheet to the court against 18 persons.

During the trial, the court recorded the testimony of 18 people. After the conclusion of the testimony, the court sentenced one to death and four others to life term imprisonment. Rest 13 other accused were also acquitted as the allegations brought against them could not be probed.
