Al-Amin Hossain, Belkuchi:

With the arrival of the winter season, mustard flowers once again add a new dimension to nature’s beauty. There is no exception in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj, where vast tract of farmland have been covered with bright yellow mustard flowers. The horizon-wide fields resemble a giant yellow carpet painted by nature itself, transforming the entire region into a breathtaking landscape.
This eye-catching scenery is captivating local residents, passersby, and nature lovers alike. Fields across several unions—including Rajapur, Dhukuriabera, Belkuchi Sadar, Daulatpur, and Bhangabari—are now dominated by blooming mustard flowers as far as the eye can see.
In the soft morning sunlight and light winter fog, the beauty of the mustard fields becomes even more charming, often forcing people to pause and admire the view.
Many visitors are seen capturing photos and videos on their mobile phones and sharing the mesmerizing scenes of Belkuchi’s mustard fields on social media.
According to local farmers, favorable weather conditions, timely rainfall, and modern cultivation practices have contributed to very good mustard yield this season. As production costs are comparatively low, farmers are hopeful of making a good profit.
Several farmers said, “The yield of mustard is expected very good this year. The flowers bring joy to our eyes, and we are also expecting a good harvest soon. If the weather remains favorable, the yield will be excellent.”
Sources at the Upazila Agriculture Office stated that mustard plays a vital role in oilseed production during the Rabi season. Although sunflower and sesame are also cultivated, mustard remains the most important oilseed crop in the region. This season, mustard has been cultivated on approximately 8,200 hectares of land in Belkuchi upazila—significantly higher than last year. The agriculture department confirmed that cultivation has exceeded the set target.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Sukanta Dhar said, “Weather conditions were highly favorable for mustard cultivation this year, and farmers completed planting at the right time. Farmers are now much more aware and capable of preserving quality seeds themselves. Cultivation of improved varieties such as BARI Mustard-14, 17, and 18, as well as advanced varieties developed by BINA, has increased. Gradually, farmers are shifting from local varieties to modern ones, which will further boost production.”
He also added that mustard is not only important as an oilseed crop but also plays a crucial role in honey production. Pollination by honeybees in mustard fields increases both honey yield and mustard production. As in previous years, beekeepers are actively working in Belkuchi’s mustard fields this season. According to the Agriculture Office, around 40 to 42 beekeepers have set up beehive boxes in mustard fields across the upazila. Beekeepers are optimistic about collecting a large quantity of high-quality honey this year.
Nature enthusiasts believe that mustard flowers are not just an element of agricultural economy but also an integral part of rural Bangladesh’s natural beauty. During the winter season, the mustard fields of Belkuchi appear like a living work of art. Visitors from nearby areas are also flocking to Belkuchi to enjoy this spectacular sight.
Overall, the mustard blossoms have brought life and joy back to the fields of Belkuchi. Farmers, beekeepers, and nature lovers alike are smiling, as winter breathes new energy into rural Bangladesh.
