The Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat has declared the Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary seat vacant after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who won the constituency in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election, assumed office as the new President of Bangladesh.
Barrister Md Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan, secretary of the Legislative Support Wing’s Law Making Branch-2, signed the notification.
It said Mirza Fakhrul assumed the office of President on Friday, making his parliamentary seat vacant from the date he took office under Article 50(4) of the Constitution.
The Parliament Secretariat has sent the notification to the government printing press for immediate publication in an extra issue of the Bangladesh Gazette.
It has also sent a copy to the Election Commission Secretariat for taking necessary steps to hold a by-election in the constituency.
The authorities have also sent copies of the notification to the Cabinet secretary, the Prime Minister’s Office, the offices of the Speaker and deputy speaker, the Leader of the Opposition and other relevant offices for information and necessary action.
