The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sent official letters to all 64 districts across the country, seeking detailed financial records related to the nationwide observance of Mujib Borsho and the construction of more than 10,000 murals and sculptures of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Confirming the move on Monday (July 21), the ACC’s Director General stated that the step was taken following allegations of large-scale misappropriation and waste – estimated at around Tk4,000 crore – from the state treasury during the centenary celebrations of the Father of the Nation.

The funds were allegedly spent under projects associated with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and other prominent national figures during Mujib Borsho commemorations.

To investigate the matter, the ACC has formed a seven-member inquiry team, headed by a Deputy Director. In its letters addressed to all District Councils, the ACC underscored the urgency of the matter, requesting immediate submission of attested copies of all relevant financial records.

The letter states: “You are kindly requested to take necessary measures and issue appropriate instructions to the concerned officials to urgently supply attested photocopies of the relevant records. This matter is of utmost urgency. The inquiry is constrained by time limitations.” The commission has specifically sought comprehensive data on: total expenditures incurred, responsible ministries or agencies, disbursed amounts, and names and designations of officials involved.

Furthermore, the ACC has asked for a district-wise breakdown of the number of murals constructed, their locations, individual construction costs, and the officials responsible for overseeing those works.
