An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police has died after suffering a heart attack while attempting to arrest a suspect in Pirganj Upazila of Thakurgaon.

Pirganj Police Station chief (OC) Mazharul Islam said the incident occurred around 1am on Monday in Senua village under Bhomradaha Union.

Shahidul Islam had been assigned as an ASI at the Pirganj Police Station.

Police said a team conducted a raid in Senua village and arrested a suspect. While bringing him back in a vehicle, ASI Shahid suddenly felt severe chest pain. He was immediately taken to Pirganj Upazila Health Complex, where physician Dr Tanzina declared him dead.

Tanzina said, “ASI Shahid died before being brought to the hospital. He suddenly experienced chest pain. It is assumed that he suffered a heart attack. A post-mortem will be needed to confirm the exact cause of death.”

OC Mazharul said, “We believe Shahid died of a heart attack.”
