Widespread flash floods and heavy rainfall have submerged thousands of hectares of Boro crop fields across several haor regions, including Kishoreganj, Sunamganj, Netrakona, Habiganj, Moulvibazar and Khagrachhari, leaving millions of farmers in distress.

Due to excessive rain and upstream water, standing and nearly harvested crops have gone underwater. The situation has worsened as breaches in crop protection embankments and prolonged waterlogging, pushing farmers toward financial crisis.

Many people are struggling to harvest semi-ripe paddy due to fears of floods.

Some farmers attempted to salvage crops by harvesting partially submerged paddy, but most see little hope.

Farmers in Kishoreganj’s haor areas are among the worst affected.

Meanwhile, the Warning Center has warned that floods may occur in five districts due to heavy to very heavy rains in different parts of the country. According to the information of the Water Development Board, floods have started in Moulvibazar and Netrakona among the five districts. Sunamganj, Sylhet and Habiganj are at risk of flooding. Because, the water level of the rivers in these districts is increasing due to heavy rains and upstream inflows. Some are crossing the danger level.

In Sunamganj, the last few days incessanr rains and upstream water have caused extensive damage to Boro rice in at least 25 haors. Due to the adverse weather conditions, it has not yet been possible to harvest half of the paddy in the haors of the district.

Local people say that the heavy rains of the last two days have caused major damage. Not only have the crop fields been submerged in water, but the threshed rice is also being spoiled due to the lack of sunlight.
