A madrasa teacher accused in a case involving the rape and pregnancy of an 11-year-old student in Madan upazila of Netrokona has been arrested.
A team of RAB-14 detained him from Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh at around 3am on Tuesday.
RAB-14 Company Commander and Additional Superintendent of Police Md Shamsuzzaman confirmed the matter to the media, adding that a press briefing will be held at 12pm on Wednesday at the RAB battalion headquarters in the Akua bypass area of Mymensingh.
According to residents, affidavits and police sources, the accused had established a Qawmi madrasa for girls around four years ago. The child studied there while staying at her maternal grandmother’s house. Her father had separated from the family, and her mother worked as a domestic worker in Sylhet.
Recently, the child fell ill and showed physical changes. Her mother returned from Sylhet and, upon questioning, learned about the incident.
On April 18, the child was taken to a clinic in Madan upazila, where medical tests confirmed she was pregnant. The girl’s mother later filed a rape case with the police station on Thursday.
Following the case, law enforcement agencies launched a drive to arrest the accused.
Meanwhile, a video of the teacher, reportedly recorded from an undisclosed location, circulated on social media on Tuesday, in which he claimed his innocence.
