The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the bail granted to Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman in a case filed with Mirpur police station in connection with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The court also directed that the related rule be disposed of.
The order was passed on Monday by a bench led by Appellate Division Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam.
Lawyer M Liton Ahmed represented the bail petition during the hearing.
Earlier, Barrister Suman was arrested from Mirpur-6 in the capital at around 1:30am on October 21, 2024.
Shortly before his arrest, at around 1:15am on the same day, Barrister Suman made a post from his verified Facebook account, writing: “I am going with the police. See you in court. Pray for me, everyone.”
Several cases were filed against the former independent member of parliament at different police stations in Dhaka as well as in Habiganj. Among them, a bail petition was filed in the High Court in connection with the Mirpur Police Station case.
The High Court later granted him bail and issued a rule. The state then appealed to the Appellate Division seeking a stay on the bail order, but the court upheld his bail.
