The International Crimes Tribunal has sent former Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, (BRUR) Dr Md Hasibur Rashid to jail in crimes against humanity case related to the killing of July uprising student Abu Sayed.

A three-member bench of the International Crimes Tribunal-2, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury passed the order following a hearing on a petition filed by the prosecution.

During the proceedings, Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam argued in favour of sending the accused to jail custody under the conviction warrant. The tribunal subsequently accepted the prosecution’s application.

The accused, Md Hasibur Rashid, was arrested late on May 16 from a residence on Salimullah Road in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur.

Later, police took him into custody after intervention involving local activists.

Earlier on April 9, the tribunal delivered its verdict in the Abu Sayed murder-related crimes against humanity case, sentencing 28 individuals to varying prison terms. Hasibur Rashid, identified as the principal accused, was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. He had reportedly been absconding since the fall of the previous government on August 5, 2024.

The tribunal is expected to produce him before court again for further proceedings, where the prosecution is likely to seek continued custody under the existing conviction order.
