A massive rush of homebound travellers ahead of Eid-ul-Azha has resulted in a severalfold jump in traffic on the Dhaka–Tangail–Jamuna Bridge highway.
A total of 56,239 vehicles crossed Jamuna Bridge in 24 hours, generating toll revenue of Tk 38.2 million, according to Syed Riaz Uddin, executive engineer of the Jamuna Bridge Site Office, on Wednesday morning.
Jamuna Bridge authorities said the vehicles crossed the bridge in the 24 hours from 12:00am on Tuesday to 12:00am on Wednesday. Of these, 36,426 vehicles were heading toward north Bangladesh, generating toll revenue of Tk 22.1 million. Meanwhile, 19,813 vehicles travelling to Dhaka crossed the bridge, generating toll revenue of Tk 16.19 million.
Riaz Uddin said that vehicles are crossing through a total of 18 booths, nine on each side of the Jamuna Bridge during Eid travels.
Among them, two separate booths on each side have been designated for motorcycles.
