For years, Dhallywood heartthrobs Apu Biswas and Porimoni were inseparable as friends. They praised each other endlessly through Facebook posts, interviews and public appearances. But on September 5, Porimoni broke that image with a scathing Facebook status aimed at Apu.

Her post read: “Earlier it was six months Hindu, six months Muslim. Now it’s six months Awami League, six months BNP. Didi has indeed shown us who the opportunists and partisans are.”

Although Apu was not named, the jab came right after a video surfaced of Apu Biswas and actor Nirob speaking at a BNP rally in Kushtia, making it clear who Porimoni was aiming at with her post.

On the flipside, Porimoni’s post sparked one big question: Why did the once ‘soul sisters’ turn against each other?

Their bond had seemed genuine. When Tanim Rahman Angshu announced ‘Khela Hobe’ (a Bubly-Porimoni film) in 2023, rumors surrounding Bubly and producer Kaushik Hossain Taposh being involved in a romantic partnership caused the film to take a backseat.

During this period, Apu and Porimoni grew close. They attended events together, exchanged gifts at each other’s children’s birthdays and stood by one another in times of joy and grief. Apu even rushed to the hospital after hearing about Porimoni’s grandfather’s death, while Porimoni was present in Apu’s moments of crisis.

But cracks in their friendship soon became visible. In a TV interview last year, Apu was asked about Porimoni and her cryptic answer raised eyebrows. “I don’t know what Pori was before and I don’t want to explain. But she couldn’t be a mother like Apu Biswas. She has gone beyond such respect.”

Parimoni, too, threw shade on social media. In March, she mocked an Eid campaign announcement clearly aimed at Apu, writing: “Announcement! That too an Eid campaign announcement!! With a Chinese phone, kids can make a few hundred better, random reels a day!”

Her post further read: “Learn the difference between pride and arrogance. If you want success by merit, stop violently attacking successful people.”

Although Apu Biswas was not named directly, social media followers of both her and Pori Moni quickly understood who the post was aimed at. Just a day earlier, Apu had posted on her Facebook profile: “Announcement: Eid campaign dropping tonight.”

Now, with last Friday’s political jab, the rift is undeniable. When TIMES of Bangladesh reached out to both Apu and Porimoni for comment, their response turned out to be the same: “No comments.”
