A court in Jamalpur has sentenced seven men to death for gang-raping a housewife in the district’s Bokshiganj Upazila, fining each of them Tk 100,000.

Judge Abdur Rahim of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict on Monday afternoon, Public Prosecutor Fazlul Haque said.

The condemned individuals have been identified only as Pappu, Biju, Badsha, Jewel, Ashraful, Jasim, and Asmat, all hailing from different villages under the Upazila, while another suspect named Idris Ali was acquitted of the charges.

Fazlul said the housewife was travelling by autorickshaw from Sherpur’s Jhagrarchar Bazar to a rented house in Bakshiganj’s Jankipur around midnight on May 25, 2025, when the vehicle, driven by Idris, was stopped along the way.

The convicts pulled her into a van, took her to an abandoned kitchen belonging to a man named Farid in Nilokkhia Uttarpara, and took turns raping her before fleeing.

The following day, the victim filed a case at Bakshiganj Police Station naming six of the accused, along with three or four unidentified suspects.

The investigating officer submitted the chargesheet on Apr 15 this year, eight months after the probe began.

The court delivered its verdict after recording testimony from six of the nine witnesses in the case.
