A local court on Tuesday granted four-day remand to ASI Amir Hossain and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy over the killing of Abu Sayed, a student of the English department of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, during the quota reform movement on July 16.
Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) investigation officers placed them before the Rangpur court with a five-day remand prayer on Tuesday. After the hearing, the court granted them a four-day remand.
Earlier, two policemen — ASI Amir Hossain and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy– were arrested in connection with the killing of Abu Sayed yesterday. Later, they were handed over to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) in Rangpur.
Confirming the matter on Monday, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Majid Ali said, on the orders of the court, they were arrested in the case filed at Tajhat police station and handed over to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
The other defendants in the case are former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Rangpur Range Abdul Baten, the then Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Moniruzzaman, the then Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Al Maruf Hossain, Assistant Commissioner Md. Arifuzzaman, Al Imran Hossain, the then OC of Tajhat Police Station Rabiul Islam, Begum Rokeya University police outpost in-charge Bibhutibhushan Roy, ASI Amir Hossain and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy. Amir Hossain and Sujan Chandra Roy were temporarily suspended. Former DIG of Rangpur range Abdul Baten and former police commissioner of Rangpur Moniruzzaman has been sent on compulsory retirement.
Besides, two teachers of Begum Rokeya University, Associate Professor of Mathematics Department Moshiur Rahman and Associate Professor of the Public Administration Department, Asaduzzaman Mandal, Proctor Office Officer Rafiul Hasan, University Branch Chhatra League President Pomel Barua, General Secretary Shamim Mahfuz, Organizational Secretary Dhananjay Kumar Roy, Office Secretary Babul Hossain have been made accused in the case along with 30 to 35 unnamed accused.
On August 18, Abu Sayed’s elder brother, Ramzan Ali, filed the murder case, naming 17 suspects, including Amir Ali and Sujan Chandra Roy. Both officers had been suspended from duty on August 3.
The arrests represent a significant development in the investigation, which has garnered widespread public attention and condemnation across the country.
