A court in Dhaka on Monday sent four people, including Biman Bangladesh Airlines Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Md Shafiqur Rahman and his wife Bithi, to jail in a case filed over the abuse of an 11-year-old domestic worker.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Raju Ahmed passed the order after police produced the accused before the court.

The two other accused sent to jail are – Rupali Khatun and Sufia Begum, both domestic workers at Shafiqur’s residence.

Earlier, police arrested Shafiqur and his wife from their residence in the capital’s Uttara Sector-9 area early Monday.

Uttara west police station Sub-Inspector Robel Mia, also the investigating officer of the case, filed a petition seeking detention of the accused, while the defence sought bail.

The court rejected the bail petitions and ordered the accused to be sent to jail.

According to police, Shafiqur, his wife, and two domestic workers allegedly brutally abused the minor domestic worker.

The victim’s family filed the case with the police station, which led to the arrests.

On 4 September 2024, Biman appointed Shafiqur as its new MD and CEO.
