The Ministry of Cultural Affairs of Bangladesh has launched a workshop-based filmmaking initiative in eight divisional cities to promote cultural development and decentralization.

This initiative will engage young creatives from Dhaka and beyond, allowing them to develop filmmaking skills through workshops led by renowned filmmakers, read the press release.

As part of the project, eight selected filmmakers will produce eight medium-length films in collaboration with novice and trained film workers. A search committee, formed last December, selected these filmmakers to conduct workshops and create films in 2025.

The selected directors are – Anam Biswas, Humaira Bilkis, Nuhash Humayun, Shankha Dasgupta, Shaheen Dill-Riaz, Robiul Alam Robi, Tasmiah Afrin Mou, and Mohammad Touqir Islam.

Over the past two months, the search committee held several meetings to select eight filmmakers, proposing and reviewing candidates based on various factors. From an initial list of 16, the committee shortlisted eight after assessing availability, interest, gender, work type, and portfolios.

Tuesday, the committee announced the selected filmmakers who have agreed to join this significant and creative initiative by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs aims to achieve two goals through this initiative. First, to connect youth from Dhaka and beyond with filmmaking, fostering skill development and talent growth.

Second, to let participants apply their training by collaborating with filmmakers. With no strict framework, the workshops encourage creativity, supporting the emergence of artistic, politically aware, and youth-driven expressions.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs seeks to connect youth from Dhaka and beyond with filmmaking, promoting skill development.
