Traffic pressure has increased on the Dhaka–Tangail–Jamuna Bridge Highway as vehicles continue to move toward the north ahead of the Eid holidays.

Since Monday morning, congestion has been reported on a 13.5-kilometre stretch of the highway from Elenga to the Jamuna Bridge.

Authorities said a total of 25,440 vehicles crossed the bridge in the 24 hours between midnight Saturday and midnight Sunday, generating Tk2.39 crore in toll revenue.

According to the bridge authorities, 12,981 vehicles travelled toward Dhaka during the period, paying Tk1.18 crore in tolls.

Meanwhile, 12,459 vehicles heading toward the northern districts crossed the bridge, generating Tk1.20 crore in toll revenue.

Syed Riaz Uddin, executive engineer at the Jamuna Bridge site office, said special arrangements have been made to manage traffic during the Eid travel rush.

“Vehicles will cross the bridge through nine toll booths on each side, making a total of 18 booths,” he said, adding that separate arrangements have been made for motorcycles through two booths on both sides.

The authorities have been collecting tolls since the bridge was opened in 1998.

Previously, the toll collection was managed by the Commuter System Network. After a change in government, the responsibility was transferred to China Road and Bridge Corporation, which has been collecting tolls since the end of 2012.
