Green chilli prices shoot up to Tk 280

Currently, green chillies are being sold at Tk280 per kg – up from Tk160-200 last week – in kitchen markets in the capital. In other words, the price of green chillies has increased by Tk 80-100 within a week. Apart from this, the prices of various types of vegetables and fish have also increased.

Vendors say that there is a shortage in the supply of green chillies in the market due to less production. Besides, the import of pepper is also decreasing. Apart from this, the supply of various vegetables and fish production is also disrupted due to rain. The prices of these commodities are also increasing. This information was learned by talking to the traders of Sheorapara, Kochukhet and Karwan Bazar in the capital yesterday.

The price of green chillies was increasing in the market even before the last Eid. After Eid-ul-Azha, it exceeded 350 taka at one stage. After that, the price decreased a bit but has now started to rise again. However, in one or two shops of Karwan Bazar, green chillies were sold at Tk 180-240 depending on the standard.

Wholesalers said the supply has decreased from several chilli-producing districts including Manikganj, and Kurigram. Apart from this, the import of green chillies from India has also decreased.

Vendors say that the price of green chillies was high at this time last year as well. Even at one stage, the price of pepper per kg exceeded 700 taka.

Various types of vegetables have seen high prices in the market. For example, eggplants were sold at Tk 100-140 per kg yesterday. Even ten days ago, its price was 60-80 taka. The price of kakarol increased by Tk 30 to Tk 100 and bitter gourd increased by Tk 30-50 and was sold at Tk 120-140 per kg. Apart from this, the price of onion, tomato and carrot has increased by Tk 20-40.

The price of fish has also increased. Rui fish was sold at 380-400 taka per kg with an increase of 50 taka. The price of tilapia and pangas increased by Tk 20-40. But the price of broiler chicken is slightly less. Broiler chicken was sold at Tk 170 per kg and golden chicken at Tk 280-300 per kg yesterday.
