The High Court on Thursday disposed of 3,409 long-pending cases in a single day as part of an ongoing special drive aimed at reducing the judicial backlog.

Md Shafiqul Islam, public relations officer (PRO) of the Supreme Court, confirmed the development.

According to him, the High Court’s Criminal Motion Benches disposed of 3,009 old criminal miscellaneous cases, while the Writ Motion Benches settled 400 old writ petitions.

With the latest disposals, a total of 24,149 old cases have been resolved over the last five designated working days since the special drive began. The figure includes 18,181 criminal miscellaneous cases and 5,968 writ petitions.

The special drive is being conducted under the directive of the Chief Justice and will continue in the coming weeks as part of efforts to streamline judicial proceedings.

The initiative aims to ensure speedy justice for litigants, reduce the backlog of cases and enhance the efficiency of the country’s judiciary.

On 7 May 2026, judges of the Criminal Motion and Writ Motion Benches of the High Court Division decided to prioritise long-pending matters. Under the initiative, one day each week has been designated for hearing and disposing of old criminal miscellaneous cases and writ petitions.
