England blew West Indies away in the Super-8 game of the 9th T20 World Cup. With this victory, the reigning champions – almost ruled out from the tournament – made a strong comeback and eased the semi-final equation.
West Indies collected 180 runs for four wickets in the scheduled 20 overs by batting earlier in the Super-8 Group-2 match at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia on Wednesday (June 19). The Englishmen got an easy victory by 8 wickets with 15 balls in hand after chasing the target.
Jos Buttler and Phil Salt opened the innings as usual for England in the run chase. Both of them batted aggressively from the beginning of the innings.
Roston Chase hit the duo in the 8th over of the innings. Their 67-run partnership was broken after the departure of Butler.
After that, Moeen Ali came to the crease. However, even after settling down, he could not extend his personal innings. Later, with Jonny Bairstow, Salt literally damaged the Caribbean bowlers. The English anchored in the port of victory with the bat of this pair.
Roston Chase and Andre Russell took one wicket each for the Windies.
Earlier, England captain Jos Buttler decided to send Windies into bat after winning the toss. Brandon King and Johnson Charles opened the innings for the team. At the beginning of the match, the pair played carefully. After two overs, these two batted aggressively.
In the fifth over of the innings, King left the wicket by retiring hurt. Then Nicholas Pooran came to the crease. Charles made a pair of 54 runs with him. Moeen Ali broke the pair in the 12th over of the innings. Charles (38) fell in a cutter by Ali’s vortex.
After that, Caribbean captain Rovman Powell came to 22-yard. He returned to the dugout after batting wildly and made a damage in the English bowling lineup. The Windies skipper scored 36 off 17 balls before getting out.
After his departure, Andre Russell came to the crease. However, he gave away his wicket before settling down. This batter has been caught by Phil Salt in Adil Rashid’s whirlwind.
Sherfane Rutherford brought a challenging score for the Caribbean by batting in a flurry at the end. His unbeaten 28 stopped the Windies’ innings at 180 runs.
Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, Jofra Archer, and Adil Rashid took one wicket each for England.
