Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury was sworn in as Bangladesh’s 26th Chief Justice at Bangabhaban on Sunday morning. President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office at a ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The event was attended by the chief adviser to the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
Justice Chowdhury’s appointment to the top judicial post, succeeding Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, was announced in a government notification on December 23. He was previously a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
Earlier, President Mohammed Shahabuddin, under the authority bestowed upon him under Article 95 (1) of the Constitution, appointed Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury as the country’s 26th Chief Justice.
His predecessor, Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, had been sworn in as the 25th Chief Justice on August 11 last year, following the July mass uprising that toppled the Awami League government. Yesterday marked his final day in the role, having reached the mandatory retirement age.
